Sudha Murty

An engineer, author and philanthropist whose work connects opportunity with service.

Introduction

Sudha Murty is a renowned Indian author, engineer and philanthropist known for her contributions to education, healthcare, women’s empowerment and social welfare. Through her professional work, writing and philanthropy, she has helped bring attention to the needs of disadvantaged communities. Her life journey reflects the importance of education, courage, equality and service to society.

Progress becomes meaningful when knowledge opens doors for others and success is used to serve society.

Early Life and Breaking Barriers

Sudha Murty was born on 19 August 1950 in Shiggaon, Karnataka, in a family that valued education and encouraged learning. Her grandparents introduced her to stories from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, nurturing her interest in reading and storytelling.

She studied engineering at an engineering college in Hubli, Karnataka, where she was the only female student in her class. Despite facing gender discrimination, she excelled academically. She later completed her master’s degree with distinction at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.

Her educational journey illustrates how persistence, academic ability and determination can challenge social expectations. At a time when technical professions were largely dominated by men, her achievements helped question assumptions about women’s capabilities.

Entering the World of Technology

In 1974, Sudha Murty became the first woman engineer to work at TELCO, now known as Tata Motors. At the time, the company had advertised engineering positions but discouraged women from applying. The notice reportedly included the line “Lady students need not apply.”

She challenged this discriminatory practice by writing directly to J. R. D. Tata, questioning the unequal treatment of women and arguing for equal opportunity. About a week later, she received an invitation to interview, with travel expenses covered by TELCO. She was selected for the position, marking an important step towards greater participation of women in engineering.

Her response was significant because she did not accept discrimination as an unchangeable social rule. Instead, she used reasoned communication to challenge a barrier within a major industrial organisation.

In 1981, she also supported her husband, N. R. Narayana Murthy, in co-founding Infosys by contributing to the initial investment. This part of her story highlights the role that personal conviction and practical support can play in building institutions.

Social Footprints: Turning Resources into Opportunity

In 1996, Sudha Murty founded the Infosys Foundation, which supported disadvantaged communities across India. As its chairperson, she helped lead initiatives in education, healthcare, rural development and disaster relief. The foundation supported projects involving schools, hospitals, orphanages and assistance for people facing hardship.

The foundation’s work has included support for communities affected by natural disasters, improvements in access to sanitation and education, and assistance to people with limited resources. These initiatives demonstrate how institutional philanthropy can complement public welfare efforts and address needs that may otherwise remain neglected.

Areas of Social Contribution

  • Education: Support for libraries, schools and learning opportunities.
  • Healthcare: Assistance for medical infrastructure and people in need.
  • Rural development: Support for basic facilities and community welfare.
  • Disaster relief: Assistance to communities affected by natural calamities.
  • Women’s empowerment: Efforts to strengthen dignity, livelihoods and economic independence.

One significant area of her work involved the empowerment of women from the Devadasi community. She supported efforts to improve their dignity, livelihood opportunities and economic independence. The source material for this article reports that more than 3,000 women gained an alternative livelihood through this initiative. Exact programme figures should be verified against reliable published records before formal reuse.

Her work reflects the idea that development must include people who are often excluded from social and economic progress. Effective social change requires patience, sustained engagement and respect for the agency of the communities concerned.

She retired from the Infosys Foundation in 2021 and stated that she would continue philanthropy using her own resources.

A Literary Voice for Everyday India

Alongside her social work, Sudha Murty has made a valuable contribution to Indian literature. Books such as Three Thousand Stitches, Wise and Otherwise and Mahashweta explore human relationships, social inequalities and everyday experiences.

Her accessible storytelling has helped readers of different ages engage with social issues. Her writing often draws practical lessons from ordinary lives, encouraging readers to reflect on empathy, fairness and personal responsibility.

Literature, in her work, becomes more than entertainment. It offers readers a way to understand different experiences, question social assumptions and recognise the humanity of people whose lives may be very different from their own.

She has also supported the preservation of Indian art, culture and heritage through the Murty Trust. Her work across literature and philanthropy demonstrates how cultural engagement can complement social development.

Recognition and National Honours

In recognition of her contributions, Sudha Murty received the Padma Shri in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan in 2023. These honours acknowledge her work in social service and literature.

However, the significance of her journey extends beyond awards. Her professional career, writing and philanthropy have helped bring public attention to equality, education, social inclusion and the responsibilities that accompany opportunity.

Lessons for the Next Generation

1. Challenge Unfair Barriers

Question discriminatory practices through reasoned, constructive action rather than accepting them as inevitable.

2. Make Education Count

Use knowledge to solve real problems and widen access to opportunity for others.

3. Serve with Dignity

Recognise the agency and rights of communities facing social or economic disadvantage.

4. Communicate Simply

Stories and clear communication can make complex social questions accessible to wider audiences.

5. Build Lasting Institutions

Sustainable change requires systems, partnerships and continued effort—not merely individual goodwill.

6. Measure Success by Impact

Personal achievement gains wider meaning when it contributes to the well-being of society.

Conclusion: Success Measured by Service

Sudha Murty’s journey demonstrates how education, courage, determination and compassion can contribute to national development. She challenged unfair practices, created opportunities for disadvantaged people and used her knowledge and resources to serve society.

Her example reminds us that development is not limited to economic growth. It also requires equal opportunities, access to education, social justice and respect for every individual. Her life offers a practical lesson to young people: turn knowledge into action and personal achievement into a contribution to the wider community.
